I'm an ecologist--population dynamics and evolution of life history traits in the North American anura, mostly. These days it's mostly applied stuff (conservation oriented and resource management) for the government.

I'm a biology major, looking towards pursuing a career in zoology. Any ideas on how to do that - classes to take, books to read, people to contact, internships?

    Much appreciated - Kai

I'm a vet tech. Worked mostly in mixed, exotic practice. Since moving to the Twin Cities, I work with small animal. I would love to work for the zoo. But, basically someone has to die before the positions open up. Becoming a Tech is a good in. Nimbus would be a good one to ask.

            Interesting story:

My Dad worked at the zoo for awhile (one of his part time jobs), cleaning the displays and cages and whatnot. Anyways. He was cleaning the rock display for one of the tiger cages, slipped on the plastic and FELL into the tiger pit! Fortunately, there were no tigers in the pit at that time (fortunately because I was not born yet ;), but the tigers could sense him and were pounding against their secondary cages to get at him.

So, he enquires about the security of the cages and they tell him "oh, yeah, no the glass between you and that tiger is 4 inches thick, impossible for the tiger to break through". My dad, however, still quits and later hears how ANOTHER worker was walking along, cleaning the cages and one of the tigers broke CLEAR through the glass and dragged the man back into the cage, devouring him. Turns out, the glass was not regulation size at all....eep!

zoology (like most of the other bio courses) has always been my favorite subject back in college. I've graduated about 2 years ago and i need to hear the freshest updates on this subject.

Im a zoology major at the University of Hawaii. The classes you want to take are all dependent on what you want to specialize in. Unfortunatly for me, I was pre-vet and decided to go into behavior instead, not a ton of classes here. However, if you're interested in fish then there are a ton of classes here, so it depends on where you are. I highly recomend you take vertebrate zoology if your school offers it. I took an ethology (animal behavior) class and was disappointed, but i think that was mostly because of the professor. I also took animal physiology, the usualy prof left and they brought some old man out of retirement to teach the class, we studied sea slugs a lot, way boring but the class had potential. I have recently become involoved in entomology so I am taking a class this fall. If there is a zoo in your area try to get a volunteer position or docent job, it looks great for experience and usually you have a lot of options with what animals you want to work with. I volunteer at the local zoo working with tigers and primates and I love it. So there is a lot of options, you just need to pick a focus. Hope this helps and god luck.

I'm best described as a wandering bum with a focus on the ecology and conservation of reptiles and amphibians. Just been putzing around from place to place for years doing temp herp work. I use the term "focus" loosely because as I find myself wanting to go back to, and looking for graduate schools I can't seem to focus on any particular aspect of Herpetology I like all of it! I have a particular interest in salamanders and snakes.

I'm an animal keeper at the San Francisco Zoo in the primate department, and I mostly work with our Chimps and Gorillas. I've worked in all the animal departments except elephants and primates has always been my favorite since I got my degree in Biological Anthropolgy.
Now I'm just a poop scooper with a fancy title.
